Allergies in dogs

Dogs can develop allergies just like people where the immune system can overreact to pollens, molds, food proteins and flea saliva. These substances enter the body through eating, breathing or flea bites.

Some common foods that can cause allergies are beef, dairy products, chicken, wheat, eggs, corn and soy.

Symptoms

Common signs are skin irritation, itching, licking and scratching. Dogs can have episodes of vomiting, loose stool or excessive gas.

Your veterinarian can place your dog on an elimination test diet to determine what foods are causing the problem. It takes about 3 months to see results and during this period your dog cannot have any flavored-containing treats or even toys.

Treatment

Antihistamines and corticosteroids are often used for itching and inflammation. Food allergies may require restricted or special diets.
