Safely handling a dog in an emergency

If your pet becomes ill or injured, you need to get it to the veterinarian as calmly and efficiently as possible. Your pet will be stressed and could become aggressive.

If you do not have a muzzle, use the leash, a scarf or even panty hose as an emergency muzzle. Tie a loop in the middle and slip in over your dog’s head and around the mouth with a loop under the chin. Tighten it with a knot. Crisscross the ends then bring it behind the neck and tie another knot. Practice making an emergency muzzle so you are familiar with how to do it before an emergency occurs.

Never throw a blanket completely over an injured dog. The pet will become more stressed and just compound the situation.

If the pet is unable to get into the car by itself or if it is too heavy for you to carry, get someone to help you and use a blanket as a stretcher. If possible have someone else drive you to emergency care so you can be with your dog. Always call ahead so they are prepared to see you.
