Heart Disease
Unlike people, pets do not have heart attacks because of the difference in how the blood is supplied to the heart muscle. However, cancer, heartworm infection and heart failure are types of heart disease common to the pets. Some pets may have a heart murmur where there is an abnormal blood flow within the heart.
Symptoms
Signs include cough, panting, labored breathing, fluid buildup in the legs or abdomen, fatigue, loss of appetite or general ill health. General exam plus additional tests including blood tests, x-ray, EKG, or heart ultrasound can be used to determine heart disease.
Treatment
Medication can be used in addition to a special diet low in salt and high in nutrients.
