Insect Bites
If your pet has a light coat then it is more susceptible to insect bites. Fleas, ticks, spiders, mosquitoes and bee stings are common causes of bite reactions in dogs. Always inspect your pet’s coat and face for signs of redness or swelling indicating that it has been bitten.
Some pets are more sensitive to the proteins contained in the saliva or venom of the biting insect.
Symptoms
They can develop severely inflamed skin, vomiting, and breathing difficulties.
Treatment
You can soothe the area with a baking soda and water paste or a cold compress. Benadryl, an antihistamine, can help the itching. Creams containing corticosteroids or antibiotics can be used.
If a bee stings your dog, quickly remove the stinger without squeezing the venom. If your pet experiences severe swelling or is having breathing problems, seek medical attention immediately.
Prevention
Controllable prevention includes use of a monthly flea and tick product (Frontline). You should attempt to limit pests in your pet’s local environment.
