Kidney Disease
Kidneys cleanse the blood and maintain proper levels of water and salt within the body. Poisons such as antifreeze, toxins and certain drugs can damage the kidneys. Bacterial infections can damage the kidney.
Symptoms
Excessive drinking of water, urinating more frequently, vomiting and loss of appetite are common signs that the kidney is not functioning properly. Blood and urine tests can diagnose kidney disease. X-ray or ultrasound can show stones, cancer or other problems.
Treatment
Fluids and medications can increase the flow of urine. A special protein-restricted diet can be prescribed so the kidneys do not have to work so hard.
