Pannus
Pannus is an eye disease that is a chronic, immune-mediated corneal disease that affects the eye and if not treated it can cause blindness. The eyes develop areas of inflammation that can cover the corneas. Blood vessels grow across the eye to the affected areas and pigmentation may develop on the surface of the cornea. Sunlight worsens the condition. Part of the disease may be an allergic reaction to foreign substances on the cornea or against the corneal tissue itself.
Symptoms
At first the eye looks red. It may be sensitive and the dog may rub them. As the disease progresses, there are clear visible changes on the surface of the cornea starting at the edge.
Treatment
Topical cortisone drops can be used. Avoiding sunlight or having your dog wear dog goggles will help. The disease can usually be controlled and vision can remain normal.
