Respiratory infections
Pets can pick up this infection from contact with infected animals. There are upper and lower respiratory conditions. Upper affect the eyes, nose or throat. Lower affect the lungs (pneumonia) and is a much more serious condition
Symptoms
Upper respiratory signs include red watery eyes, runny nose, sneezing and coughing. Viral infections usually are noted as a watery discharge. Bacterial infections often have a thick discharge.
Lower respiratory signs include coughing, wheezing and difficulty in breathing. Parasites and fungal infections can also cause this condition.
Your veterinarian can listen to your pet’s lungs with a stethoscope. Chest x-ray may be needed.
Both respiratory infections come with fever, decreased activity and poor appetite.
Treatment
The best treatment is rest, a nutritious diet and fresh water. A cough suppressant, decongestant or expectorant can be prescribed by your veterinarian. NEVER use human medication without specific instructions from your veterinarian. Antibiotics are not effective against viruses. They only work on bacterial infections. Some pets with severe infection may require hospital care.
Prevention
Routine vaccinations can protect some respiratory infections.
